Set priorities via the 80/20 Principle

Introduction

This business tool is the proven way to determine priorities in almost anything, but especially for projects, products, strategies or actions in business.

It's especially useful when a business does not have the resources to do everything on its list at the one time and wants to know what to focus on to achieve the greatest progress.

It can be used at the highest level in a business (for strategic direction and planning), at the division or department level (to set improvement or investment priorities) and at the operational level (to set short-term changes to systems or processes).

All you need is a list of things (items) you wish to prioritize. After your list is prepared, determining the priorities involves three simple steps of:

1.    Scoring the list

2.    Graphing the list

3.    Focusing on the few that deliver the greatest results.

You'll find this is a brilliant way to get people together to discuss the relative importance of the items on your list. Use it as often as you like with lists of projects, products and actions involving different groups throughout the business. It's a great way to build teamwork and motivate change.

Whether you want to tackle the "runs on the board" items firstly or go for the high impact "big winners", now is the time to get your people thinking critically about the priorities. Using this tool regularly ensures you always define and work on the top priorities in your business.
